How to install an electric water heater yourself (practical guide)

If you prefer to do things yourself, installing an electric water heater is possible, provided you follow the correct instructions and take the necessary precautions. At Immosegur, we explain how to do it step by step.

Before you begin, make sure to disconnect the power and shut off the water supply. If there's an existing water heater, drain it completely by opening the safety valve and removing the anchors that secure it to the wall.

Next, prepare your tools and materials: you'll need heavy-duty wall plugs and screws, electrostatic insulation sleeves, reinforced flexible hoses, a safety valve, Teflon tape, a drill, a wrench, and a level.

The next step is to attach the new water heater to the wall. Use the template included in the kit to mark the drilling points and ensure it's perfectly level. Insert the appropriate wall plugs and screws to support the weight of the water heater, which can exceed 100 kg when full of water.

Afterward, connect the hot and cold water pipes. On the blue inlet (cold water), install the safety valve and one of the electrostatic insulation sleeves. On the red outlet (hot water), attach the other sleeve and the corresponding flexible hose. Use Teflon tape on the threads to prevent leaks and ensure the connections are tight.

Next, bleed the water heater. Open the hot water taps until the flow is constant. This step removes any trapped air and prevents the heating element from running dry, which could damage it.

Finally, make the electrical connection. Verify that the outlet is grounded and that the wiring is of the correct gauge (at least 2.5 mm²). Plug the water heater into the power outlet and set the thermostat to the desired temperature.

Remember not to turn on the water heater until it is completely full of water. Turning it on empty can damage the heating element.

Installing an electric water heater yourself can save you money and give you the satisfaction of doing it yourself. However, if you encounter any problems, don't hesitate to contact a professional to avoid electrical hazards or leaks. With this guide, you'll have hot water at home safely, efficiently, and for a long time.
